Will You Need Wedding Insurance?

To insure or not to insure? Or, is my wedding covered?

While it’s often a requirement at many facilities that couples secure “liability coverage” as part of their contract with the establishment, it is often asked by wedding couples about this coverage.

Liability Insurance
When a venue requires liability insurance, it must be obtained. You are not being singled out for special treatment. This is a standard practice for many facilities and really a protection for the couple as well. Without insurance, we can’t think of a worse scenario then having a family member or guest damage property or become injured and then have to deal with the ensuing hassle of determining fault, restoring all parties to whole, and bearing the financial burden without any help! For the facilities, it’s just plain good business sense, and the way they protect their business investment.

Couples should check with their own homeowners insurance policy/agent. It may be that their own coverage will work and they need only to secure a certificate of insurance to provide to the facility with the appropriate amounts of stated coverage. However, if an independent agent or carrier is needed, check your local area for “Special Event Insurance”. SPECIAL NOTE: Make sure you understand your coverage and the terms! Not all policies or coverage apply to special events like a wedding where alcohol or other “special” circumstances are occurring.

Wedding Insurance
Wedding insurance is a type of coverage that protects against contingencies. It is basically any special circumstance that might arise where you would need to insure or “protect” the dollars you have spent to have your wedding. Common contingencies include natural disasters, ruined photographs, second cakes, and refundable deposits in case of misfortunes due to death or military service. There are even policies that insure you if the groom gets “cold feet!” The premise is that you receive a monetary payment should these problems or contingencies occur and “ruin” your day! It doesn’t fix your problem but it provides you some form of compensation to recoup some of your financial investment or repair some of the damage.

The small price for wedding insurance is probably well worth the peace of mind, especially when planning a destination wedding.
